Who is a candidate?

If you have undergone facial plastic surgery and experienced less improvement than desired or have had a complication you may be a candidate for revision surgery.  If your surgeon has told you nothing can be done he/she may not be familiar or comfortable with the technique(s) required to improve or correct your problem.

You may be a candidate for revision or tuck surgery or simply a different procedure if you have:

Why do some patients need revision surgery?

Plastic surgery is no doubt a precision discipline, however it is also an art that is subject to a variety of factors.  Patient factors include each patient's own healing response and tissue integrity (negatively affected by advancing age, smoking, etc).   Procedure-related factors may include not doing enough or doing too much with during tissue rearrangement, removal or tightening despite your surgeon's best effort to do just the right amount in this regard.

Plastic surgery is as much an art as it is a science.  No matter how well-trained or experienced your surgeon is your results will be uniquely yours.  The need or desire to have a revision or tuck procedure DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT YOUR SURGEON DID SOMETHING WRONG OR PERFORMED BELOW THE STANDARD OF CARE.  Again, it is much more likely that your surgeon attempted to do just the right amount while being careful to not do too much.  It is generally much easier to make corrections or improvements when too little was done previously.  Patients seeking aesthetic and/or reconstructive plastic surgery need to accept the fact that a revision or tuck may be necessary to achieve the optimal result.

Some patients do very well with a specific procedure while others achieve only partial improvement with the same procedure.  Part of the art of plastic surgery involves being relatively certain that a specific procedure will give a particular patient the desired improvement, but also knowing what else should be done if the result is for any reason less than satisfactory.

Which doctors are qualified to perform revision surgery?

Many doctors that perform cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery do not routinely perform revision surgery.  Dr. Holcomb performs revision and/or tuck procedures on a regular basis for patients that have previously undergone surgery elsewhere.

Patients should carefully investigate their prospective surgeon's training before scheduling surgery.  Most fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeons have more comprehensive training and experience in facial surgery than surgeons who have only been through basic training in general plastic surgery (http://www.aafprs.org/patient/about_us/fps_vs_gs.html)  It is also true that some oculoplastic surgeons may be more capable than surgeons with other types of training in performing various types of eyelid reconstruction.  Doctors from any of these disciplines may be very capable of addressing your particular problem, however the longstanding trend in medicine is that of increasing specialization.  In keeping with this trend, Dr. Holcomb's practice is limited to plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, head and neck.
