Patients with a heavy neck, an ill-defined jaw-neck line or loose tissue beneath the chin may benefit from neck contouring.
Important considerations include previous surgery. Depending on the cause(s) of the neck fullness, neck contouring may require removal of excess fat (i.e. liposuction or other fat contouring), tightening of the platysma muscles and repositioning or removal of loose skin.
While neck contouring is performed in all patients undergoing Face and Neck lift, it may be performed as an isolated procedure or with other facial plastic surgery procedures. The procedure generally involves small incisions under the chin and behind the earlobes. Neck contouring, however, is not a substitute for other procedures designed to eliminate jowling.
Some men may obtain a better result with a different procedure that directly removes loose skin and excess fat and tightens the platysma muscle (Direct Submental Excision).
