Except for electrolysis, the traditional methods of hair removal (waxing, shaving, depilatory creams) are temporary. Although permanent, electrolysis is uncomfortable, very time-consuming and inefficient. Laser hair removal is now the most popular method for permanent reduction and elimination of unwanted hair.

 

The laser used in hair removal targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, damaging the follicle and removing the hair. Hair follicles normally undergo several phases including growth or anagen, destruction or catagen and a resting phase called telogen. Individual hair follicles are in different phases at any given time (otherwise we would lose all of our hair periodically). Laser hair removal only works on hair follicles in the growth phase so a series of treatments is required to eliminate the majority of hair follicles in the treatment area.
